How Long It Takes to Start ABA Therapy in Orange County

Most families wait longer for the paperwork than for a therapist. Here is the real timeline from diagnosis to first session, step by step, and where the weeks go.

Short answer: with the diagnosis and referral in hand, most Orange County families start ABA four to eight weeks later. Without them, the diagnosis itself is usually the longest wait, often months.

Here is where the time actually goes, step by step, and what you can do at each one.

The four steps between "we think it's autism" and the first session

Every family goes through the same four steps, whichever provider they choose:

  1. Diagnosis. A licensed professional confirms autism spectrum disorder.
  2. Referral. Your child's physician writes a referral or prescription for ABA.
  3. Assessment and authorization. The provider assesses your child and the health plan approves a treatment plan.
  4. Scheduling. A technician and supervising BCBA are assigned and sessions begin.

Most of the waiting in Orange County happens in steps 1 and 3. Step 4 is where a provider's waitlist lives, and that is the one step BehavioTech has removed.

Step 1: Diagnosis (two weeks to six months)

If your child already has a diagnosis from a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, neurologist or psychiatrist, skip ahead. If not, this is almost always the longest wait.

Hospital developmental clinics in Orange County often book three to six months out. Private psychologists who do autism evaluations can be faster, sometimes two to six weeks, and many are covered by insurance. Children under three can also be evaluated by the Regional Center of Orange County through Early Start, at no cost, which runs in parallel with a medical evaluation.

What helps: ask your pediatrician for a referral to more than one evaluator and take whichever appointment comes first. Our guide to getting an autism diagnosis in California lists the routes.

Step 2: Referral (same week)

Once the diagnosis is in, your child's pediatrician writes a referral for "behavioral health treatment" or "ABA therapy." This usually takes a phone call or a portal message and a few days. Some HMO plans route the referral through the plan itself; we tell you if yours does.

What helps: ask for the referral at the same visit where you discuss the diagnosis, and ask the office to send it directly to the provider you have chosen.

Step 3: Assessment and authorization (two to four weeks)

This is the step families underestimate. Before a health plan pays for therapy, it needs a treatment plan, and the plan comes from an assessment.

At BehavioTech the assessment happens in your home within days of the referral: a BCBA observes your child, talks with you about what matters most, and writes the plan. We submit it to your insurer the same week. The insurer then reviews it, which takes two to four weeks for Anthem Blue Cross and Aetna in our experience, occasionally faster.

What helps: send us a photo of your insurance card as early as step 1. We run the benefit check while you are still waiting for the diagnosis, so there are no surprises about coverage or copays when the referral arrives. We also handle every renewal, which comes up every six months, in the background.

Step 4: Scheduling (days, if there is no waitlist)

Here is the step that varies most between providers. Many Orange County agencies keep a waitlist of weeks or months because they have more authorized families than technicians. Your authorization can sit approved while you wait for a start date.

BehavioTech does not run a waitlist. We take on families we can staff, and we say so on the first phone call. When your authorization comes through, your team is assigned and the first session is scheduled within days. If we could not start promptly, we would tell you rather than hold your place.

Putting it together

  • Diagnosis and referral in hand: 4 to 8 weeks to the first session, most of it the insurer's review.
  • Diagnosis in hand, no referral yet: 5 to 9 weeks.
  • No diagnosis yet, evaluation booked: add the wait for that appointment to the 4 to 8 weeks.
  • No diagnosis, no appointment: call us anyway. We can point you to faster evaluators and start parent training in the meantime.

What you can do this week

  • Ask your pediatrician for the referral, or for evaluation referrals if there is no diagnosis yet.
  • Send us your insurance card so the benefit check is done before the paperwork arrives.
  • If your child is under three, contact the Regional Center of Orange County about Early Start.
  • Start parent training, which can begin before an authorization for direct therapy.
