What California law covers
Since 2012, California has required state-regulated health plans to cover behavioral health treatment, including ABA, for people with autism, and Medi-Cal covers it for members under 21. Coverage includes the assessment, direct therapy, BCBA supervision and parent training. Our guide explains how insurance coverage for ABA works.
From card to first session
Benefit check
Send us a photo of the card. We confirm ABA coverage, deductible, copay and any referral rule, and tell you in writing.
Diagnosis and referral
We tell you exactly which documents the plan needs and help you get any that are missing.
Assessment and authorization
A BCBA assesses your child at home. We submit the plan to the insurer and manage the authorization and every renewal.
Start
No waitlist on our side; the start date is set by the authorization, usually two to four weeks.
Aetna questions families ask
Is BehavioTech in network with Aetna?
Yes. BehavioTech is an in-network ABA provider for Aetna in California, so families use in-network benefits. Some employer plans route behavioral health through a separate administrator; we check that during the benefit verification.
Does Aetna cover in-home ABA therapy?
Yes. California law requires state-regulated health plans, including Aetna, to cover behavioral health treatment for autism, and in-home is a standard setting. Coverage includes the assessment, direct therapy, supervision by a BCBA and parent training.
What does Aetna need before ABA can start?
A diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder from a licensed professional (a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, neurologist or psychiatrist) and a referral or prescription for ABA from your child's physician. Our intake team tells you exactly what is missing and helps you get it.
Will I owe anything?
It depends on your plan's deductible, copay and coinsurance. Before the first session we run a benefit check and tell you, in writing, what your plan pays and what you would owe per session. No surprises.
How long does authorization take?
Typically two to four weeks from the day we submit the assessment, and we submit the assessment within days of completing it. Re-authorizations every six months are handled by our team in the background.
Other plans: Anthem Blue Cross, CalOptima Health. Private pay is always welcome.
