What California law covers

Since 2012, California has required state-regulated health plans to cover behavioral health treatment, including ABA, for people with autism, and Medi-Cal covers it for members under 21. Coverage includes the assessment, direct therapy, BCBA supervision and parent training. Our guide explains how insurance coverage for ABA works.

CalOptima questions families ask

Is BehavioTech in network with CalOptima?

Not yet. BehavioTech is in the process of contracting with CalOptima Health. Leave your details through our intake form or call us and we will contact you the day we can accept CalOptima members. In the meantime, the information on this page helps you start ABA through CalOptima now.

Does Medi-Cal cover ABA therapy in Orange County?

Yes. Medi-Cal covers behavioral health treatment, including ABA, for members under 21 when it is medically necessary. In Orange County, Medi-Cal is delivered through CalOptima Health. An autism diagnosis is not strictly required for Medi-Cal, but a recommendation from a licensed physician or psychologist is.

How do I start ABA through CalOptima today?

Ask your child's pediatrician for a referral for behavioral health treatment, then call CalOptima's Behavioral Health Line at (855) 877-3885 (or your health network, if you are assigned to one) for a list of in-network ABA providers. Children under three can also be referred to the Regional Center of Orange County's Early Start program at no cost.

What does CalOptima need before ABA can start?

A diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder from a licensed professional (a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, neurologist or psychiatrist) and a referral or prescription for ABA from your child's physician. Our intake team tells you exactly what is missing and helps you get it.

Will I owe anything?

It depends on your plan's deductible, copay and coinsurance. Before the first session we run a benefit check and tell you, in writing, what your plan pays and what you would owe per session. No surprises.

How long does authorization take?

Typically two to four weeks from the day we submit the assessment, and we submit the assessment within days of completing it. Re-authorizations every six months are handled by our team in the background.

Other plans: Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna. Private pay is always welcome.
